![]() Whoever does not think of energy is not thinking about the future These were the remarks of Shaikh Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Makhtoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai while launching the Emirates Energy Strategy 2050, aimed at enhancing the efficiency of consumption by 40 per cent, raising the contribution of clean energy to 50 per cent and savings worth Dh700 billion by 2050. Dubai Municipality has successfully taken many initiatives to ensure sustainability & promoted renewable energy in all the aspects. One more such initiative was launched on 01-Mar-17. It is Smart Flower. This was placed in front of Dubai Municipality headquarters so that public can see & understand its functionality. It is a flower shaped solar panel that has the provision to change its direction so as to face sunlight all the day. The inbuilt sensors allow it to catch sun rays 23 percent more efficiently as compared to roof top solar panels, which are static. The mobility and direction changing capability makes this Flower more sustainable than the others. This was a symbolic gesture to motivate & encourage the people of UAE, rather worldwide. It takes only 5 Square meters of space to produce as much energy is produced by traditional solar panels of 32 Square meters. It generates as much as 6,000 Kwh per year. There are many more exciting features in this flower. One is that it shuts itself when there is no sunlight. Second is that it can protect itself from strong wind by tilting & shutting itself. Moreover, the future versions will include Wifi & mobile charging points. This will definitely help save the precious and expensive electricity and can be installed in gardens or rooftops or in balconies.
