"[April Free Report] Importance of Clean Energy in the Fight Against Climate Change in Cameroon¡±

by Jean Blaise Seka | 26-04-2023 05:34

Clean energy is crucial in combating climate change in Cameroon, as it is in many other parts of the world. Cameroon is particularly vulnerable to the impacts of climate change, as it is located in the tropics and has a high dependence on agriculture, which is highly sensitive to changes in temperature and rainfall patterns.

Due to the insufficient supply of renewable energy in Cameroon, the burning of fossil fuels has become the primary source of energy. When these fossil fuels are burned, a significant amount of carbon dioxide is released into the atmosphere. This greenhouse gas traps heat in the atmosphere, thereby increasing global warming and endangering the health of local populations.  In the northern parts of Cameroon, average temperatures have already risen by 1.5 ¡ÆC. This has led to heatwaves, a decline in the nutritional value of food, lower crop yields, and ultimately, food insecurity.

Adoption of clean energy technologies can help combat climate change in Cameroon by reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Currently, Cameroon's energy mix is heavily reliant on fossil fuels, particularly oil and gas, which are major contributors to global greenhouse gas emissions. By transitioning to clean energy sources such as solar, wind, hydro, and geothermal power, Cameroon can significantly reduce its carbon footprint and help mitigate the impacts of climate change.

Another important benefit of clean energy is that it can help improve energy access and security in Cameroon. Many people in Cameroon, particularly in rural areas, do not have access to reliable electricity. By expanding access to clean energy, such as through the use of off-grid solar systems, Cameroon can improve energy access and help reduce poverty and inequality.

In addition to these benefits, investing in clean energy can also create new job opportunities and stimulate economic growth in Cameroon. For example, the development of large-scale renewable energy projects can create jobs in construction, engineering, and maintenance, while the growth of small-scale renewable energy systems can create new business opportunities for entrepreneurs.

The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) must be achieved by 2030 in order for Cameroon's vision of becoming an emergent nation by 2035 to come to pass. Clean energy is essential for this to happen!!.

We therefore urge the Cameroonian Ministry of Mines and Energy, Eneo Cameroon, and all other necessary parties to exert greater efforts to ensure the country's citizens' transition to a cleaner, safer, and more affordable energy source.

In a nutshell, clean energy is a vital weapon in Cameroon's fight against climate change. Clean energy has the potential to contribute to the development of a more resilient and sustainable future for the people of Cameroon by reducing greenhouse gas emissions, enhancing access to and security of energy,  generating new job opportunities for the youth, and ensuring economic growth.
