John Muir is one of the most important environmentalists of the 19th Century. The foundation he laid with regards to the importance of our natural environment and his creation of The Sierra Club, has done so much to further the awareness of and activism to protect our environment. Muir?s first experience in the Yosemite Valley was overwhelming and eventually led to his influence on President Theodore Roosevelt to create the Yosemite National Park. If you have ever hiked through Yosemite, you will gain an appreciation for what a beautiful natural environment means to those of us who respect planet Earth and want to protect it for future generations. If you have every strolled through Muir Woods near San Francisco, you know how important this man was in helping to create beautiful, natural areas that would be enjoyed by so many people for so many years to come. The Sierra Club, that was founded by Muir in 1892, has become one of the most powerful environmental organizations in the world. There are over 2 millions members worldwide today. Significant accomplishments of the Sierra Club include helping to pass the Clean Air Act, the Clean Water Act, and the Endangered Species Act. The Sierra Club and their 'Our Wild America' campaign act as a voice for our planet in order to protect it for future generations. Important areas that are targeted include combatting climate disruption, preserving national wildlife habitats, protecting public lands, and protecting and restoring forests. The influence of one man, John Muir, continues today and has spread to millions who have the same concerns and dedication to protecting our environment. One man really can make a difference and John Muir has proven that to be true. This fact should help each and every one of us realize that we can also make a difference. We all count in this battle to save our planet and the natural resources we treasure. One plus one plus one eventually equals two million. That is an awesome fact.
