Admirable Environmentalist

First of all, I want to apologize for not posting articles. I left for a field work in a rural community. I hope my apology would be accepted.

Amina J. Mohammed was one of the most active ministers during this current regime of President Muhammadu Buhari before her appointment as the Deputy Secretary General, UN. The ministry of environment isn?t a popular one like the finance and petroleum ministry until Amina J. Mohammed?s appointment. She and her team made the ministry very effectively bridging the gap of communication between the ministry and the citizens.

Amina J. Mohammed is a British-Nigerian born in Gombe state in 1961. She is well known for her humility and courage when addressing environment issues. She is both a goal and result oriented person and during her one year as the environmental minister in Nigeria, she achieved a lot of creating an enabling sustainable environment for Nigerians. Her most notable achievement is the ?Ogoni Clean-Up?. Ogoni is a settlement in the oil-rich Southern part of Nigeria known as one of the highly polluted communities in Nigeria since in the 90?s due to leaks of petroleum during exploration. In late 2016, the government created an initiative for the clean-up of Ogoni land aiming at making it enabling for human settlement.

Another achievement is the cleanup of lead poisoning in Shinkira community in Niger state. The lead poisoning led to the death of 30 people and affected the health of more than 300 people who are mostly children. This was achieved in partnership with the Médecins Sans Frontières/Doctors Without Borders (MSF), an international medical humanitarian organization. During her farewell speech as the environmental minister, she said: ?the environment ministry, through the Nigeria Erosion and Watershed Management Project (NEWMAP), in collaboration with the World Bank, completed 72 erosion and flood control projects in 26 communities and 19 NEWMAP participating states aimed at protecting lives and property.?

Some of the works she started but not yet completed include the implementation of the NDCs sector roadmaps, the launch of Green Bonds, to resuscitate the Lake Chad, strengthening and enforcing regulatory functions and increased efforts to reclaim the desert through a new and improved Great Green Wall (GGW) strategy amongst others.
