Bio-fuel from Wet waste

by Neha Swaminathan | 12-02-2017 03:23

Reading an article in Gulf News, I came to know that Dubai Carbon is soon going to start a new programme to turn wet waste into fuel  by the end of March 2017. Wet organic waste like general food waste  from households and restaurant s  can be converted using heat and spinning technology to create biosolid fuels.

These environmentally friendly fuels can generate valuable wealth instead of municipalities spending  money to incinerate food waste in landfills. According to Dubai Carbon, the converted waste can be used as a fuel source anywhere there is a furnace.  Reducing food waste going to landfills reduces methane emission from the rotting garbage.

Dubbed "Community Waste Management", Ivano Ianelli, CEO of Dubai Carbon said the "pilot project will focus on decentralising waste management and will replicate small waste processors across town." Stopping the garbage carrying trucks reduces carbon emissions in addition to the fuel from the processed waste.

The programme will take UAE closer to its clean-energy target to 27 by 2021 as part of its commitment to the Paris Climate Agreement to fight climate change. Leftover food valued at $4 billion is thrown into landfills every year from UAE homes, eateries and public  events  as per Emirates Environmental Group in 2016.

As per Ivano Ianelli, wet waste will be converted through a heated spinning technology to remove up to 60 percent of the moisture and results in a fluffy product fit for being used as a fuel source. It converts waste management costs to a business opportunity as the fuel can be sold in markets.
