![]() An earthquake (also known as a quake, tremor or temblor) is the shaking of the surface of the Earth, resulting from the sudden release of energy in the Earth's lithosphere that creates seismic waves. Earthquakes are usually caused when rock underground suddenly breaks along a fault. This sudden release of energy causes the seismic waves that make the ground shake. The melting of glaciers driven by global warming portends a seismically turbulent future. When glaciers melt, the massive weight on the Earth's crust is reduced, and the crust bounces back in what scientists call an "isostatic rebound.? This process can reactivate faults, increase seismic activity. This has happened several times throughout Earth's history, and the evidence suggests that it is starting to happen again. Of course, not every earthquake in the years to come will have a climate-change link. But if some earthquake are related to climate change it's clear that we should put more actions to our commitment against global warming.
Global warming occurs when carbon dioxide (CO2) and other air pollutants and greenhouse gasses collect in the atmosphere and absorb sunlight and solar radiation that have bounced off the earth?s surface. |
