UAE has one of the harshest very hot, dry and humid summers during August and September, with temperatures reaching 45 degree Celsius (113 degree Fahrenheit). In neighboring countries like Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and Qatar, this soars upto even 50 degree celsius for many days. Even the sea temperature reaches 37 to 40 deg C, with humidity averaging over 90%. The rising heat has some health problems which I wish to analyse and suggest the remedies available Major health problems during summer are A. Dehydration: Dehydration happens rapidly during summer, especially afflicting old people and children. One should drink lots of water to stay hydrated. Heat stroke: A very serious condition that causes very high body temperature, confusion, fast breathing, sweating and fast pulse. Heat strokes need urgent medical attention as they can be fatal. To Avoid heat stroke, one should stay away from the direct sun ray and heat. The UAE has a rule that strictly enforces construction labor should have a midday break from 12.30pm till 3 pm during mid June to mid September. People cannot work in direct sun during these hours. Violators have a huge fine which forces all companies to comply. B. Food poisoning: If the food is not refrigerated or stored in high temperature, it turns stale very fast and can cause food poisoning. Good eateries mark on food packs the time before which one should consume it. C. Eye damage: The heat can lead to the dehydration of the eyes. People wear sunglasses to protect from the soaring heat. D. Car accidents: The drivers are less focused because of the heat. Plus if the radiator does not cool well, the cars even catch fire. E. Skin problems: The soaring heat and humidity attracts more pollution from air and makes a breeding ground for infectious bacteria and fungal infections. Sun burn and Skin cancer: It occurs mostly to people with less melanin (people with light skin colour) however it can still occur to others with darker skin color. It is essential to use sunscreen before being exposed to the sun. Also taking bath after long exposure to sun is essential. Applying moisturizers after bath also helps. Sunscreens are effective if protection from UVA & UVB rays with the SPF being 30+. It should also be fragrance free. Summer rash: Excessive sweating caused by the heat can lead to rashes and eczema. Person should wear light clothes and take a shower after sweating. Summer acne: Caused by heavy makeup which blocks the pores and affects them not being able to breathe. Deep face clean is required during the summer. One should apply light foundation and makeup. Also clean the face properly after that with special cleanser. Dry skin: Skin dries up often because of dehydration. People should drink lots of water and fresh juice. Skin Fungal Infection: Fungal infection increases during summers. Keep the skin clean to stay safe. Athlete's foot: This is caused by fungus in the foot. Always keep the foot dry with cloth. Foods to eat or avoid during summer time: One should eat Almonds (nuts): contains omega 3 , protein, vitamin E, calcium and zinc (helpful for the skin), Avocado: contains vitamin a, c and e, iron, potassium (neutralizing to the cell damaging free radicals), Blue berries: contains antioxidants, Pineapple: contains alpha hydroxy acids, Salmon: contains omega 3, zinc. Should also drink plenty of water. Avoid: Beverages such as: coffee and tea, spicy food, oily junk food, sauce, rich meals (fried fish & chicken)
