A good effort has been led by the Nepalese government to control the waste disposal problem from public vehicles. The unmanaged throwing of waste like plastic, paper, wrappers of junk food, etc directly in the roads was causing a great deal of problems. It not only lead to pollution but also diminished the aesthetic value of the roadways. So to put an end to all this the government has made compulsory the use of trash bins in the public vehicles and a fine system for punishing those who do not follow this rules, has also been enacted. The Ministry of Federal Affairs and Local Development has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Federation of Nepalese National Transport Entrepreneurs Association for the control and management of waste generated from public vehicles. Both the parties agreed to collaborate with each other to end the culture of throwing empty beverage cans, pet bottles, plastic bags, food scraps and fruit peels and other waste out from a moving vehicle. The agreement enforces all public buses, minibuses, microbuses and tempos to make arrangements of dirt bin or plastic bag meeting the standard prescribed for the passengers to dispose the waste they generate during their journey. It also requires the vehicle staff to display notice prohibiting waste disposal, at a clearly seen place within the vehicle. The concerned driver or helper of a public vehicle will also appeal to the passengers not to throw waste from the vehicle and to cooperate with the government and transport entrepreneurs to keep the city and highways clean. In the case of long-route vehicle, passengers will be reminded of it every three hours. The waste produced in the vehicle will be collected by the concerned municipality from its destination, mainly the bus park areas. As per the law, anyone acting against the law may face a fine of up to Rs 50,000 or an imprisonment of up to three months or both. Lets hope that others efforts like this will also be raised by the government. |
