![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() As the worthy ambassadors may be aware from my reports that I am quite passionate about recycling. In this regard, many drives, programmes and campaigns have been organized by me in the past. Keeping with the trend and vying to do something different this time I decided to hold an E-Cyclethon.
The idea behind this campaign was to recycle the e-waste lying at our houses and more importantly to raise awareness that here in UAE e-waste can easily be recycled. Many bins are provided at many strategic locations for this specific purpose. But to my dismay, I noticed that people are not aware and they put non-related such as furniture items in those bins.
Recycling is a complex process, wood recycling is different than that of paper, plastic and cans. Beeah in Sharjah has some of the biggest recycling plants of the Middle East region. They recycle all of the above and also auto tyres and cars as well.
So, focusing on the e-waste I organized a campaign dubbed as E-Cyclethon on 07-Jan-17 in collaboration with Beeah. People were encouraged to bring all sort of e-waste such as Computers and its accessories, DVDs, CDs, Audio cassettes, Mobile phones and chargers, Head Phones, Batteries, Lamps, Video games and alike.
This was designed as a competition and top contributors were promised certificates from Beeah and other consolation prizes were also planned.
Considering the varied categories of e-waste we have decided to judge on the basis of carbon footprint of the items recycled. The person contributing to the most carbon emissions reductions per KG was to be declared as winner.
The response to my campaign was tremendous. There were 75 registrations & when all the people brought their e-waste the bin were soon overflowing. Our judge has a tough time calculating all the carbon emissions, taking a sum of all individual contributions and deciding the winners.
As soon as the contributions were over, I addressed the gathering & raised awareness about e-waste recycling and reminded them not to throw the same as household waste as the segregation was tough & often they all land in landfills. By recycling the e-waste it acts as a double-edged sword. The landfills are saved & the items are recycled. Carbon footprint is checked.
I always say that small contributions matters a lot and this encourages & motivates so many others to follow suit. Therefore, I encourage all the ambassadors to organize such e-waste collections in their regions & share their success stories at this amazing portal.
