GEOINFORMATICS : TECHNOLOGY FOR A SUSTAINABLE FUTURE

by | 08-01-2017 05:39

Geoinformatics is the science and the technology which develops and uses information science infrastructure to address the problems and changes in the fields of geography, cartography, geosciences, related branches of science, engineering, business and environment. Let?s remember that climate change is caused by factors such as biotic processes, plate tectonics, volcanic eruptions, variations in solar radiation received by Earth and certain human activities. If we look closely we can see that geoinformatics is directly related to the causes and the fundamentals of climate change.  Geoinformatics has at its core the technologies supporting the processes of acquiring, analyzing and visualizing data, are the results of such processes important if we want to study and construct a more sustainable future?

As we want to reduce climate change risks over the next 10 years, geoinformatics helps us to acquire enough information from all the components of the nature (micro environment, macro environment, physical environment and biotic environment), we can then analyse, study these components so that we can visualize and interpret them. This technology instituted by geoinformatics play a very big role in risk management because a risk is the potential of gaining or losing something of value when taking risk resulting from a given action or inaction, foreseen or unforeseen.

In order to foreseen and avoid climate change over the next years, we firstly need to give a better place to risk management in our development plans for action. Risk management is the identification, assessment, and prioritization of risks followed by coordinated and economical application of resources to minimize, monitor, and control the probability and/or impact of unfortunate events. But, to be able to identify, assess and prioritize such events, we need to gather enough information. Fortunately, we can access a wide range of information through geoinformatics, and these data will enable us to easily take priority actions at the very important phases of this climate change risk management.

After that, we can never ever hope to reduce risks without managing it. Never!

Geoinformatics, this wonderful technology includes computer science and information technology to simplify the manipulation of big data over a long and continuous period of time. If we need attain a more sustainable future, we need to use a technology that is implemented second by second because for a long term goal, we need long term action.

Unfortunately, most of the actions of governments are taken one day and implement for years. This didn?t work, doesn?t work and will not work. We need to put in place a plan that respect the steps as initiation, planning, execution, control and finalization. Geoinformatics alone can?t work without the approbation of the political will and without the education of our leaders about the challenge of our decades.

All the political, economic, social, cultural and generational forces should be included in the process of decision so that the information that will be analysed by geoinformatics will reflect our society?s challenges. And, the results taken will meet satisfaction, commitment and the building of a more sustainable world that will majestically reduce climate change risks around the globe for the next 10 years.

Whatever technology we want to apply, if we do not collect the right information in the right way and manipulate it rightly to achieve the right goal, we won?t succeed.

INFORMATION IS POWER and GEOINFORMATICS IS  THE TECHNOLOGY FOR CHANGE .
