Ecotourism - One of the World's Fastest Growing Industries

by Adam Zhou | 06-01-2017 18:11

Ecotourism, or in other terms, the promotion of preserving natural environment and its biodiversity through tourism facilities, is one exemplar way to spread awareness regarding global issues. Benefits and impacts in regards to development can include:

  • Minimize negative impacts by preserving the beauties of the environment rather than exploiting it

  • Building a sense of community in the locals, building a sense of ownership and taking action to preserve biodiversity

  • Strengthened livelihood - source of income/jobs and helps people living in rural areas to do things rather than being bystanders. Income can be spent on further preserving the environment as well as the community

  • Shared awareness/knowledge to tourists, not just of history and culture, but also of how they can contribute to sustainability and conservation, leading to more tourists in the long term

According to the International Ecotourism Society, this tertiary service grows 20-34% each year, and by 2020 is estimated to take a quarter of the world?s travel market. This seems big, but in another perspective, there is only approximately 5 million ?dedicated, self-identified? ecotourists worldwide. If further awareness campaigning and others of the sort is conducted, this number is set to be much higher, especially due to a multiplier effect. In more specificity, if an individual is to return from a trip and due to the experiences encountered, he/she will set goals to choose eco-friendly sites in future vacations. By telling other acquaintances regarding this mindset, maybe others will also choose to do so. Currently, there is a rough 3-2-1 ratio in different parts to a mindset spectrum (survey conducted in Europe) 30% are aware of this industry, 20% take this into account, while 10% insist on the necessity of being an ecotourist. If more people seek to belong to the latter, then more concrete change in nature may come to happen.

This will most likely take place if further adequate management is to take place, as this will support both the influx of tourists and also prevent unnecessary consequences at hand. For instance, fragile landscapes should not hold too many visitors and activities can be spread out, in relation to the growing rates. Payments should be accessible and reasonable as protecting the environment can come at cheaper costs (e.g. lodging). Investments and cooperations with like-minded organizations will greatly help as well. However, this should all be with thoughts on preserving the environment rather than personal gain. Only with this value in mind can success ensue.

The profile of an ecotourist is not just one of an adventurer dressed in a camouflage outfit. It is everyone of us each with our own passion to both indulge in nature?s beauty and to protect it for future generations.
