Climate change, global warming are most conversing topics at present because by today, we can experience lot of consequences of climate change, such as changes in rain fall pattern, frequently occurring hurricanes, rising of sea level etc. Global warming has been increasing from the era when the industrial revolution begins. Therefore, industrial sector provides considerable contribution for climate change by emitting considerable amount of greenhouse gases to the atmosphere. Hence, today, most of the industries are committing to reduce their impact on environment and governments also pose various environment related rules and regulations on industries to control their activities. Apparel industry is one of the main income generator in Sri Lankan economy. I thought to write this month article with relevant to apparel industry since it is one of the longest and most complicated value chains in world chains of supply. Therefore, their impact on environment is very high when comparing with other industries. Nowadays, Sri Lankan apparel manufacturers are highly conscious about their climate change impact and are committing to reduce/ neutralize their carbon footprint in order to remain in the market as an environmental conscious apparel manufacturer or to gain a competitive advantage over other apparel manufacturers. Most of the apparel manufacturers are highly concern not only to reduce their organizational carbon footprint, but also to manufacture carbon neutral apparels. To remain in the market place as a carbon neutral apparel manufacturer, most of the Sri Lankan apparel manufacturers buy carbon credits from the carbon market and can be seen a trend of investing for carbon credit generating projects such as, tree planting projects and renewable energy projects which are beneficial to the environment, business entities and also to the community. |
