Sustainable actions in the Solidarity Walk [Green Greetings]

by Rohan Kapur | 08-12-2016 23:30

The United Arab Emirates has celebrated its 45th National Day on 02-Dec-16. On this event A UAE Solidarity walk was organised in Dubai. The idea behind this event was to participate in National Day Celebrations & also to show our solidarity towards this vibrant nation where over 200 nationalities thrive in peace and harmony.

My full family & many of our young Eco-heroes, part of our group Serve the Earth have registered for this exciting event. We all made a plan to be together in the walk.

Early morning at 7 AM on the day of the walk all of us reached at Mamzar Beach Tracks. We were all beaming with energy and were carrying UAE Flags, bands & banners. There were drummers also beating the beats & encouraging the crowd. Soon the venue was sprawling with hundreds of participants. The entire scene was colorful & patriotic.

Soon the walk started at the appointed time of 8AM amid beating of drums, slogan shouting & showing our solidarity towards UAE. It was a 3 KM non-competitive walk along the jogging tracks of a beautiful beach named Mamzar Beach.

By the way I wish to mention that the jogging tracks were made of recycled old vehicle tyres that were discarded and possibly will end up in landfills if not recycled. The track felt very smooth & perfect for a jog.

The 3KM walk was soon finished & all the participants were handed over water bottles, juices, fruits & light snacks. People started eating & drinking. I noticed that enough garbage disposal bags / bins were not available & therefore people were disposing indiscriminately. Clean surroundings were turning into dirty grounds.

Being Eco-Conscious I & my team members noticed the same & immediately the young champs Lisha & Rusan asked for gloves & disposal bags so that waste can be picked up from the ground. Mr. Dilbag Thakur, father of Lisha is ever so enthusiastic about Green actions and is always more than willing to participate in such actions whole heatedly. Also, our car is usually stuffed with gloves & Garbage disposal & segregation bags, therefore the cleaning up was not an issue at all. Promptly I took the stuff from the car & distributed among the members. Therefore, my team was ready for the action.

Before staring the process we decided to segregate the waste. One bag each will contain plastic bottles & for other waste separate bags will be used so that all waste does not end up in the landfills. This was a perfect place for recycling the waste as lots of water & juice bottles were being consumed.

Soon, as we started collecting the waste we noticed that people were very cooperative & immediately came forward to use our bags. In no time all the area was spruced up. After some time Dubai Municipality cleaners arrived on the scene accompanied by their superiors. They were very impressed with our activity and praised us whole-heatedly. We handed over the segregated bags to them & informed about bags containing plastic bottles so that they may be processed for recycling

Therefore, utilizing my holiday I spread my Green Greetings in three ways

1. To my team members by encouraging them to collect the indiscriminate waste disposal, Segregate the same & hand over to the recycling authority.

2.       2. To the public present at the solidarity walk. They immediately understood our intentions to collect the disposed waste & they co-operated wholeheartedly in our collection process.

3.       3. To the Dubai Municipality workers. We made their tough job easy by collecting the waste in bags & we went a step further & segregated the recyclable waste.
