"Silent Spring" by Rachel Carson

by | 21-11-2016 14:15

"Some evil spell had settled on the community: mysterious maladies swept the flocks of chickens the cattle and sheep sickened and died. Everywhere was a shadow of death. In the town the doctors had become more and more puzzled by new kinds of sickness appearing among their patients. There had been several sudden and unexplained deaths, not only among adults but even among children, who would be stricken suddenly while at play and die within a few hours" (Silent Spring- Richard Carson).

Richard Carson undertook to write this book in 1958, when she was 15 years old. Though it was written in 58 years back, she has quoted the situations which can be experienced in nowadays under the current environmental conditions. The best example which came suddenly to my mind to prove the above quotation extracted from the book is "Dengue epidemic". In my region, fifty nine deaths have been reported so far as a result of the Dengue epidemic this year and according to the statistics of  Ministry of Health, nearly 38000 individuals have contracted the epidemic this year.

The chapter fourteen of the book "One in every four", describes the battle of living things against cancer and the environmental changes/ causes that affect to increase the number of cancer victims. According to the ministry of health statistics 2013, over 14000 patients in Sri Lanka have died owing to cancer. Therefore, this is the high time for us to talk about the rapid changes in the environment and to take effective actions to mitigate these environmental changes occurred as a result of human activities.

"Silent Spring" is an environmental science book which is consisted with much of the data and case studies, the scientific community had known of for some time, but Carson has put them all together for the general public and she has done a revolution through this book.
