International Coastal Clean up

Dubai Municipality in co-ordination with the Jebel Ali Marine Century [managed by Emirates Marine Environmental Group] organized an International Coastal Clean-up on 28-Oct-16. The site was a protected area in Jebel Ali, Dubai, UAE. Thgis was organized to raise awareness among people to keep our beaches clean from garbage and to educate masses to dispose the trash in the bin provided for the same.

As an enthusiastic environmentalist I registered for this event and reached the site early in the morning. I was excited to see that many more students joined us & participated in cleaning the protected beach area & its? surroundings. The areas were littered with trash & other garbage. I was pained to see that the sea water was also littered. This is very harmful to the marine life & oceans are threatened due to garbage being dumped into them. As such UAE has placed very strict laws & they do not dump any sewerage water or thrash into the oceans. They are committed to keep the sea clean & marine life protected.

Such events convey a strong message to the public to keep their surroundings neat & free from garbage. The bins are provided everywhere and it is easy to use them & dispose.

My allotted garbage bag was soon full with all types of thrash collected by me from the beach and sea. Along with me many fellow students had also collected various types of trash. They were spread out in the vast area & soon completed the task. All the collected garbage was brought to a central point & then workers of Dubai Municipality picked those bags & after weighing all the garbage carried it in their pick up van. Our collection was 500 KG and was surprising to note that so much littering has happened at our beautiful beaches.

After completing my task I started networking with my peers and other people present there. As a responsible ambassador of Eco-Generation, it is my duty to educate the people about taking care of the environment & introducing them to this great networking portal of the youth. Therefore, as a call of duty I addressed the gathering about keeping the beaches & oceans clear from trash. This will help to curb pollution particularly Air – Pollution as the landfills emits methane & carbon dioxide gases which cause severe Air-Pollution. The people listened carefully & agreed not to litter around & dispose it in segregated bins so as to ensure that landfills are not burdened any more.

At the clean-up site, Dubai Municipality has kept many plants to take home. This is another concrete step towards curbing the Air-Pollution as plants purify the air and are essential for our eco-system. I picked up 2 plants & carefully placed them at the balcony of our house. As I already have some plants, these have added value to my green collection. As a result, now I have managed to maintain a small garden at our balcony. The details & other exciting pictures shall be shared in my next report.

I firmly believe that small actions bring great motivations. Therefore, I encourage all fellow ambassadors to carry out the clean-up drives in their regions, organize awareness programs, plant trees  & share the reports at this amazing portal.
