![]() That the thermal factory run by Chinese wants to dump 1,5 million m3 waste from marine engineering and swing basin dredging into Binh Thuan sea has been worrying a multitude of citizens. Besides breaking the ecosystem balance, negatively impacts on Hon Cau Preservation Park, this process of waste dumping can destroy the "house" of sea creatures, resulting in bad consequences for manufacturing operations and seafood aquaculture. Shrimp Association "calls for help" ![]() Mr. Phan Tuan Cu, Vice President of Binh Thuan Shrimp Associations, could not hide his anxiety after acknowledging that Vinh Tan Thermal Factory wants to "bury" 1.5 million m3 of waste into the sea. This is because the factory is between two centralized shrimp production areas in Vinh Tan, Binh Thuan, and even less than 1km away from the water tubes used for manufacturing activities. Mr. Cu said that: "The association is worried that the dredging near the shrimp production areas may affect water resources used for the shrimp. We cannot know for sure where they dump the waste. According to social media, this affects Hon Cau Preservation Park, while our place is 10km away from there. If the park gets affected then shrimps are likely to be harmed." However, according to Resource and Environment Service in Binh Thuan, Agriculture and Countryside Development in Binh Thuan, and Marine Resource Protection Department in Binh Thuan did not mention impacts of the action of the thermal factory on shrimp production and marine feeding nearby the factory. Therefore, Binh Thuan Shrimp Association wants authorized agencies to pay attention to shrimp production after going over the process of dumping waste into the sea. On Nov 7, the association also sent an urgent proposal to Urban Committee to express their anxiety about the situation. According to the association, shrimp season will begin soon, so enterprises have imported a multitude of shrimps for breeding purposes. As a consequence, the association requests careful consideration while reviewing the proposal for waste dumping of the factory. "At the same time, please inform Binh Thuan Shrimp Association of environmental dvelopments of the surroundings of the factory so that we can take prompt actions to prevent unwanted results and minimize the damage to shrimp manufacturing companies as well as aquaculture.", clearly stated in the document. In terms of impacts of waste dumping, a professor from Vietnam Fishing Association said: "You can imagine it like the mountain landslide washing buildings away. The bottom of the sea is similar to the "house" of sea creatures. If we add more land and dirt to it, it will be just like landslides on land. Washing everything away. This causes a loss for ecosystem there, since sea creatures have no place to live in anymore. These negative consequences are obvious." "This is an action doing harm to environment. Before dumping into the sea, a report should be made to see whether these impacts on environment are legal or not according to the laws." - stressed the professor. Even Coral Cannot Escape ![]() Having spent time on researching the place where Vinh Tan Thermal Factory has asked to dump their waste, Dr. Nguyen Huu Huan said: "Dumping a great amount of waste, not to mention the poison level, it likely has great effects on ecosystem due to the burying." "Especially, coral reefs will be affected greatly by dumping activities owing to the impact of deposition of inorganic sediment. Meanwhile, organic sediment is light, so it will suspend, and re-suspending leads to turbid water, decreasing the penetration depth of sunlight. A lack of sunlight prevents the photosynthesis of coral and seaweed." - a scientific explanation. Experts from Aquarium are worried: If 1,5 million m3 of waste is dumped into 30 hectare coastal waters that have strong hydrodynamic regimes and are only 13km away from the factory, 500m away from the border of the preservation park, it will definitely have tremendous effects on nature and local sea ecosystem. Mr. Huan said: "We cannot dump waste into the sea for the excuse that dumping waste on land will cause pollution. Because, when dumped into the sea, waste has way too bigger impacts compared to on the land for high transmission speed, largely affected areas, especially with biologically diverse places, great resources and typical ecosystems." "We need to change the idea that whatever is unsafe on land should be brought into the sea, since the "capability" of the sea, especially coastal waters, is not endless." ____________________ |
