(APRIL FREE REPORT) LAND RECLAMATION

by Sandrine Yaah | 22-04-2023 03:34

Land reclamation is the process of improving land use or creating land by removing water from muddy areas or raising the level of the land. With the increasing demand for land, it may seem as a nice solution but it will all depend on the nature of the original land and the intended use, taking into account any impact on the local and wider environment.
With a continuously increasing human population, land reclamation will definitely be more often used as a way to make available land for people to live in. With our climate continually changing accompanied with climate crises, land reclamation should definitely be accompanied by mitigation measures to crisis that may arose as a result of the land use which will definitely require alot of finances
Eventhough Land reclamation is not always done for the benefit of humans, sometimes to protect and restore an ecosystem which may have otherwise been lost, this is not likely the case in most developing countries. With Cameroon as an example, land reclamation is mainly to make available land for construction of  buildings. This is not due to shortage of lands but rather the quest for cheaper lands . With urban migration been on the rise, the quest keeps increasing. The situation is further worsen by the lack finances to put in place mitigation measures such as adequate drainage systems, and the consultation of environmental experts which has resulted to floodings, pollution, and biodiversity lost. With the presence of low prohibiting the reclamation of some wetlands, the is the question of how effective they are and what more can be done.
