Netherland's best transformational strategies for a greener community and its action plans

by | 20-10-2016 16:38

At present, most of the countries in the world implement several strategies for greening their communities and making economically, socially and environmentally balanced countries. Netherland is one of the country in the world who implements best transformational strategies for a greener community. In its 2002 National Environmental Policy Plan (NEPP), the Netherlands government introduced its transition policy for sustainability to deal with persistent problems by encouraging system in seven major areas including energy, natural resources, agriculture, the chemical industry, safety, human health, and land- use/ quality of living environments ( BIBLIOGRAPHY Canada, P. H. (2009, December). http://www.horizons.gc.ca/eng/content/transitions-sustainable-future#. Retrieved October 2016).

The following sectors are identifies as key to sustainable communities and buildings in Netherlands

  •  Housing construction
  •  Utility construction
  •  Urban development
  •  Ground- road and water way construction

Within the above mentioned sectors, they consider several themes such as, energy, water, and materials, waste, the "inside environment" and health, durable design, "Quality of space" and mobility. As examples for their best implemented projects towards a greener community are the project "De Wijk Tilburg", an environmental approach in recently developed residential districts (community level), the project of Martini hospital which is one of the first hospitals in Netherlands created from industrial, flexible and dismountable points of view (Sustainable communities and green buildings in The Netherlands, 2007). The Dutch town of "Kollum" is home to the country's first energy neutral houses which are both economically and environmentally beneficial. Other than the above mentioned commitments, Netherland government stimulate the usage of bicycles, highly committed on energy saving practices, promote the use of renewable energy sources and encourage research institutes relevant to sustainable communities.

Netherland is using new urban development policies and ideas to create sustainable, climate change- proof landscapes. They are transitioning from an economy dependent on oil and gas to one driven by renewable energy sources like wind power and sustainable transportation and they are sharing green business practices with other countries also. As an evident for that, today, the Netherlands is sharing best practices in green urban planning, logistical support networks for electric cars, wind farms that power entire cities and numerous other solutions with American allies.
