My Internship in Bali

by Dewi Retno S | 12-10-2016 12:30

I apologize that I missed the deadline because of school work. But here I am! This time I want to tell about my internship.

Last mid-July until August, I did my internship in Ngurah Rai International Airport, Bali. My major is environmental engineering, so it's not unusual if you wondering why I choose this place. Even my friends tend to choose industries as their internship place. What can environmental engineer do in airport?

Ngurah Rai International Airport is one of busiest airport in Indonesia, so the amount of waste water generated was quite big. Waste water mainly comes from toilet and kitchen in airport's restaurant. And in international airport, waste water is one of main point which many of other countries consider to use the airport.

Ngurah Rai International Airport has two waste water treatment plant, bioreactor and STP (sewer treatment plant). Waste water from international terminal will go to bioreactor and treated with aeration. The water which treated from bioreactor will be used to watering the garden in airport area. Other waste water will be treated in STP, using aerated lagoon and sedimentation lagoon. Water which treated from STP will be dispose to stream water. The effluent from STP will use as a flush water in toilet in the future.

To ensure the water which come out from waste water treatment plant not polluting the stream water, PT Angkasa Pura as the operator of Ngurah Rai International Airport will conducting water quality testing in laboratory every month. But sadly I can't get a chance to check the water.

Anyway, it was my experience on internship in Bali. Beside waste water, I look at incinerator, apron, and even doing toilet inspection. Surely, environmental engineer also needed even in airport.
