Popular Environmental Organizations in Malaysia

1. Malaysian Nature Society 

Malaysian Nature Society (MNS) is the oldest membership-based environmental non-government organisation (NGO) which established in 1940. A group of expatriates highly interested in Malaysia?s natural heritage and decided to share a list of abundant natural history album. Today, MNS has more than 10 branches across Malaysia and over 16000 members across the world. In order to support the huge amount of members and run day-to-day society?s activities, MNS decided to hire 40 dedicated staff. The vision of MNS: For Malaysia?s natural heritage and rich biological diversity to be effectively protected, managed and conserved for the benefit and appreciation of all Malaysians. MNS is working closely with the government, bringing the constructive suggestions to ministry and other Malaysia decision planning platforms. Main activities of MNS are habitat management, environmental education, publications and awareness event.

2. Biji-biji Initiative

Biji Biji Initiative is a social startup which uses discarded materials to reproduce new products. Their core values are sustainability, collaboration and innovation. Sustainability: Sometimes we are surprise that plastic, glass or wood we threw out are still in good working condition. Biji-biji shows people the actual value of the materials and how we can capture it. That is the reason why all Biji-biji?s product are made from recycled materials. Collaboration: Two minds are better than one, four hands are better than two. Biji-biji works close with a number of startups and social enterprises to enhance their social impact. All product designs are available for anybody to modify, improve and reproduce. Innovation: Through experimentation and collaboration, we turn an idea into imagination and turn imagination into reality. In doing business, there are 12 Key Sustainability indicators that we use to measure ourselves, as detailed in our Governance Framework. These indicators are a measure of how we are performing, beyond just our Profit & Loss statement.

3. EcoKnights

EcoKnights is a Non-Government Organization (NGO) founded by Yasmin Rasyid and Mariam Osman in 2005 as offering urban community?s assistance in developing their environmental initiatives. The vision of EcoKnights is to raise a nation of ecologically conscious Malaysians that embrace and adopt sustainable lifestyles. EcoKnights serves the community through education and awareness programs to research and public participation programs to consultation. The partners and clients range from government agencies and communities to corporate agencies and NGOs. Activities organised by EcoKnights include Anugerah Hijau, Kuala Lumpur Eco Film Festival, Multimedia and Youth-based Outreach Programmes and Social Responsibility Projects.
