Flood Disaster Kill Many and Destroy Properties in Niger, Nigeria

by | 19-09-2016 03:51

Climate refugees may become one of the worst global crises soon if rainfall partners, infrastructure and development don't change soon. Since the 2012 flood disaster in Nigeria that claimed 363 lives and displaced 2.1 million people, heavy flood have become common place in the country ever since but it may be reach the height of 2012. The Nigeria Meteorological Agency (NIMET) had predicated flooding in about 8 states and that rivers spanning about 9 states will overflow their banks.  This is now happening as there is intense flooding in many states in Nigeria with Zamfara state recording one death and having about 500 people displaced. Other states in the country are experiencing flood problems owing to poor drainages and persistent heavy rainfall but the level of damage unlike 2012 has been reduced owing to improved awareness and repeated warnings from relevant agencies.

In Niger, another West African country, flood disaster emanating from torrential rainfall has taken the lives of 38 people while leaving 92,000 homeless according to the United Nations. The UN says 26,000 livestock have been lost and 9000 homes destroyed. Humanitarian bodies are providing aid to help the internally displaced people in Niger but the fear is that the flood may worsen in both Niger and Nigeria.

It is really unfortunate that lives are still lost in this kind of disaster but more investment in the drainage channels will see a reduction in this kind of situation.
