Sri Lankan Education Sector?s Great Efforts towards a Green World

Education systems support for the intellectual and personality growth and maturity of the individuals. Hence, Sri Lankan government has given priority for the education sector?s development. As a result of this, many new courses and degree programs have been introduced in the Sri Lankan university system, such as, ecobusiness management, environmental conservation and management, molecular biology and biochemistry, marine science and fisheries biology etc. The knowledge of these fields will definitely have a significant contribution towards sustainable development of Sri Lanka.

The higher education sector of Sri Lanka, the lecturers, university students and other academics have initiated for many new events such as, reforestation programs, waste management programs which helps to drive the Sri Lankan society towards a green world. As a milestone, most recently, one state university of Sri Lanka took an important green step forward by organizing the Sri Lanka?s first conference on green practices. At there, current environmental best practices of educational institutes and other organizations such as, green building methods, plastic recycling projects in universities, green practices in plantations were discussed and new green innovations were identified.

Not only the higher education sector, but also school children put great effort to create a green world. ?Parisara Sumithuro? is one of the programs which were implemented by the Ministry of Education and the Central Environmental authority of Sri Lanka in order to inspire school children towards giving solutions to current environmental issues in Sri Lanka and to enhance environmental friendly attitudes in school children (www.cea.lk). The Environmental Pioneer Brigades established in government schools also do a great effort to enhance environmental awareness among school children and motivate them to participate in environmental activities. Through this unit, schools are encouraged to launch small scale eco projects to provide practical experience to school children through active participation in environmental activities. Sri Lankan education sector put a great effort to protect the environment and to solve current environment related issues in Sri Lanka through enhancing the environmental education in schools, universities and other educational institutes and through motivating the active participation for the environment related projects.
