Why Indonesia Should Develop Sustainable Transport A.S.A.P

by | 30-08-2016 18:42

Hello!

Sorry for the late post though!

So, today I will report Sustainable Transport in Indonesia, in terms of Public Transportation.

As the fourth biggest population in the world, Indonesia 's demand to transportation would be growing-up each year. According to UNEP Report, Indonesia's car ownership keep growing exponentially, especially the motor cycle's ownership. Even 88% of fuel transport consumption are consumed by road transport which is refers to private transportation. (See the figure below)

1
Yet, Air pollution issues has become a chronic problems in Medium-size and metropolitan cities due to lots of private cars, traffic jam, emission gas from motor vehicles and Industries, which can trigger more issues such as Urban Heat Islands and etc. Transport sector itself, gives 60 - 80% proportions in air pollution issues (Linda in UNEP reports).

In terms of GHG emissions, Indonesia's transportation would contribute 31.9% of its GHG emissions generally (Worldbank.org). It's almost 16 MT CO2eq per-year.

These issues, should be addressed a.s.a.p! In terms of Transportation sectors, Indonesia needs to develop the sustainable Transportation system, which is refer to develop its mass/public transportation, infrastructure, and educating people for using Public Transportation often. Yups, in Indonesia, 1 household could have -at least- 2 or 3 motorcycles, besides having 1 car also. Each of family member can have their own motorcycle to go to school or everywhere.

These issues need to be addressed a.s.a.p, besides having good transportation and infrastructure, our government needs to educate people how "cheap, fast, and comfort" to use Public Transportation as well. So that we can achieve Sustainable Transport in Indonesia.
