Global Tiger Day Celebration: Team Roar

by | 24-08-2016 13:56

Every year on 29th July, Global Tiger Day is celebrated aimed at raising awareness on conservation of Tigers. These magnificent creatures are the largest species of cat with iconic stripes on their robust body. Within last century, tiger population declined dramatically by 97% and in 2010 only 3200 wild tigers were left. Thus, in 2010 governments of 13 tiger range countries set an ambition to double the population (T*2) of this endangered species by 2022.

World Wildlife Fund (WWF) Nepal has an ongoing The Generation Green (TGG) Campaign which aims to engage, motivate and empower 500 thousand Nepalese youths in conservation sector within 5 years of time (2014- 2018). As such, on 19th and 20th June, 2016 TGG organized Youth Leadership Development Program at Hetauda, Nepal. A group of 11 students from Agriculture and Forestry University (AFU) actively participated in the training. I and my friend Ashish Niraula led the team (both of us had worked as Mentees of TGG Mentorship Program in 2015) which later transformed into TEAM ROAR.

Team ROAR organized series of event for a week to celebrate Global Tiger Day involving huge mass of university students. The events organized on each day were:

21st July,   Panipuri Fellowship at Agriculture and Forestry University (AFU) where 40 participants were divided in 5 groups namely Tigers, NGOs/INGOs, Buffer Zone, Government & Students/Activist. This was a role playing game, each team had to represent the name they were assigned, for instance the group Tiger had to say things from the perspective of Tiger.

(PS: Panipuri is a street snack, sour, hot and salty in taste)

27th July,   2nd Panipuri Fellowship at Balkumari College of Science where similar activities were repeated.

Also, the team members travelled to different places of Chitwan, interacted with people in campus and outside on the road, asked questions about Tiger conservation like What do you think should be done for conserving Tiger? Or Should Tiger be conserved? Or what do you think are the major threats for tiger?

The footage was used as content for online awareness campaign and published in Team ROAR?s faebook page.

29th July,   Flash Mob was performed on the song ROAR by Katy Perry, in the middle of street targeting the people working in the shops, pedestrians and the residents. Public were curious about the arts performers were displaying and their objectives. The team members explained their motive behind the Flash Mob and gained appreciation as well.

Wall painting of tiger was done simultaneously on the same day on the walls of District Development Committee (DDC), Chitwan by volunteer Ms. Nisha Shrestha (a student of Fishery Science at AFU).

Formal Closure of the campaign was hosted at AFU, Conference hall where Associate Professor Dr. Krishna Kafle, was invited as chief guest. Video presentation was done about the activities accomplished and remarks by chief guests on the role of youths in tiger conservation.

Additionally, I and my friend Ashish were honored with Certificate of Appreciation for mentoring TEAM ROAR in diverse aspects. It was definitely a blissful moment to be treasured by junior brothers and sisters as their mentor and source of inspiration.
