Sustainable Transport in Nepal

by | 21-08-2016 00:50

Public transportation is an important service for the people. Rapid urbanization and increasing economical activities in cities have increased vehicle ownership and usage in urban areas of Nepal. The current patterns of motorization adversely affect traffic congestion, air and noise pollution, and traffic accidents and injuries. The unsustainable trends in transport sector as presently observed would further worsen social equity, lower energy security, increase greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, and destroy natural habitats and ecosystem(EST,2014). Besides that every rainy season natural disasters hit the country damagig the roads and infrastructures and risking human life.In such a scenarion where every year the destruction of road infrastructure is maximum our transport system must be made resilient and sustainable. And it can be sustaianble only when it is user firendly and environmentally suitable.
In Nepal public transport includes bus, taxi, rikshaw, tempo  and they earn through the fares. While developed countries are focusing towards green economy and sustainable transports, sadly Nepal has many remote areas that arent fortunate to even see transport facility. In that regard it?s diificult to keep sustainable transport in priority. However, the major city like Kathmand,Pokhara where the traffic is high need to adapt transport system that has less impact to the environment. There is no doubt that sustainable transport can make great contribution in overall development of the country.

Transportation systems consume about 20-25 per cent of the world?s energy and accounts for high carbon dioxide emissions. Use of renewable energy source can thus limit the emission of GHG?s .Governments should priotize sustainable public transportation systems which are affordable, efficient and environment-friendly,for that works must be done from grassroot level such that the general public will chose public transport over private transport and help in maintaining low carbon footprint.
Talking about the cities of Nepal,Kathamndu has the worst scenarion and needs actions urgently. Though different stakeholders as Clean Air Network Nepal(CANN) organized Kathmandu Sustainable Urban transport Forum,ICIMOD envisioned sustainable Transport in Kathmandu Valley by 2030 and national Environmentally Sustatinable transport(EST) strategy was drafted, there hasn?t been any awork.Hence, hope that in coming days government will make the country?s transport sustainable and people will have better understanding in regards of nature conservation.
