These month?s have been very hectic to me as I am in my final years and caught up with fieldwork, proposal writing, practical?s and assessments and I was unable to connect with Eco-generation.I want apologize to eco-generation family as well as fellow ambassadors for being inactive here,in between I missed the reports and whole lot of inspirations and events,I will try to cover up in days afterwards. However,I was always close to nature and people who are the protectors of nature. Recently I had got an opportunity to work in the forests of Sindhuli,Nepal and today I am going to share about it.The history forest management in Nepal can be divided into five parts:- Before 1926 A.D. Forest land were controlled by landlords and the Ranas would use forest as rewards to the people at their service . During that time Land use policy in the hills was designed to encourage to convert forest land to agricultural land in order to increase tax base (Bajracharya,1986). 1927:-1960 A.D. the major activities during this period includes:- 1. Timber export to India and establishment of some offices in the Terai districts. 2. In 1942,Department of Forest was established. 3. In 1947,Institute of Forestry was established. 4. Forest Nationalization Act 1957,declared all forest of Nepal as national Forest.Rural people reacted to the act by destroying the indigenous forest management system(Gilmore et.al.,1991).There was no definite management system, and rules were not suitable to people. Also, there was lack of forest Technicians. 5. In 1959,Ministry of Forestry was established. 1961-1977 A.D. Large forest area in Terai was destroyed for Malaria eradication.Forest Act,1961 made provision of land to be made available for small private forest plots and introduced the idea of transfering government forest land to village Panchayat for their use(Mahat,et.al.,1986).In 1973 National Park and wildlife Conservation Act came into force which separated national forest area with protected areas with the establishment of national parks,Wlidlife Reserve,Hunting reserve,Conservation Area, strict Nature Reserve and Buffer Zone etc. 1978-1990 A.D. In 1988,First National Seminar in Community Forestry was held which developed 21 year?s Master Plan for Forestry Sector. After 1990 A.D. After 1990?s peoples participation in forest management was increased as it was realized that conservation can go ahead only with the participation of the people. Forest user Groups were formed and national forests were handed to community. In 1993,Forest Act was formulated which categorized forest into two broad classes i.e. National forest and Private forest. The national forest is further categorized into community Forest,Leasehold forest,Government managed forest, Religious Forest and Protected Forest. With different steps taken for the management of forest resources in Nepal,Community forestry has proven to be sucessful and has set an example globally with it?s more than eighteen thousand forest user groups in the country. But it is protection oriented and doesn?t include any scientific operations which doesn?t make it sustainable and allows minimum economic benefitrs. And large patches of forest in Terai have been deteriorated in lack of scientific management.Nepal still imports large amount of timber from foreign countries while our timbers are decaying in the forest.Hence, recently the scientific forest management model has been introduced in the country. In initial days it faced many challenges as it was not easy to convince people as well as political leaders that conservation can be done by felling of even green trees while in the past only dead, dying and diseased trees were removed from the forest and no silvicultural systems were used, leaving the forest with large number of same aged trees with no regeneration.scientific forest management underlies the principle that forests can be protected as a whole, and not the individual tree forever because it has it?s own lifespan and as forest is a renewable resource we must take maximum benefit from it. And currently it is going to be implemented in many districts of Nepal and Sindhuli is one of them. We(me and my two other team mates headed by brother Keshav vices Nepal) from Environmental S worked in two Community forest?s of Sindhuli district which shall adopt scientific forest management afterwards for the making of management plan at first we prepared the map of the forests through GPS points obtained from boundary survey and later they were divided into different plots where Forest Resource Inventory was to be taken, kauche CF had 97 plots and Navajyoti had 53 plots in total. The two forests were Kauche CF and Navajyoti CF.They were located in Kamalamai Municipality and Ranichuri VDC.Both were Sal mixed forest but one lied in Churia belt and other in Mahabharat belt.Working in Churia forest was a tough task, due to the fragile geology and the numerous ridges that we had to pass to go to a single plot. Also,we would get a lot of mosquito and ants stings on our way to the forest and the rain would make us more difficult as the leaf litter would be more slippery letting us fall and stumble numerous times. But the love the local resource persons gave us added strength in us and at the end of the day we would forget everything. The people we were provided from the CFUG were of different ethnic groups, status and education level and during our stay we got opportunity to understand their views and share our knowledge with them. While some people had doubts about the effectiveness of SFM,later they were convinced that it?s a good approach. Hope this initiation in Nepal, gives best result and helps in sustainable conservation of forest resources as well as improves the quality of life of people.
