Why Do You Keep It?

by Rohan Kapur | 09-08-2016 00:46

Despite being a teenager & an Eleventh grader I did not realized that I was keeping so much of the stuff neatly stacked in the deep cupboards of my house [never used since past many years] until this campaign caught my attention. Yes this was an initiative by Government of Dubai, Land Department to give your old Toys a new life. It was aptly titled ?Why do you keep it?? All items [stuffed toys, educational toys & electronic toys] in clean & good condition to be donated to them.

This is another form of recycling where all you old but in good condition toys may be donated & subsequently handed over to the needy. Imagine a little girl playing with your teddy bear or a toy that was just packed & kept in the cupboard & never used for years.

I gathered all these toys & teddy bears. Trust me, readers it become a sack full of teddy bears [all very innocent looking cute adorable pieces, close to my heart]. Some were my birthday present, some were prizes, some other gifts. This was followed by a basket full of educational & electronic toys. All in perfect working condition. I took care to replace all batteries & gather the chargers & other accessories so that each toy is in a working condition and thus, may bring a smile on an innocent face. As a parting thought, last time, I played with all, kissed them goodbye, neatly packed them & handed over to the Emirates Environmental Group [EEG] for subsequent hand over to the Dubai Land Department.

As I entered the EEG office with my stuff all the staff was very happy to see such a neat & beautiful collection. I was elated to see their response & happily handed over all to them. Apart from this stuff I also carried papers & plastic recyclables as well, neatly packed.

Besides this there was another campaign of EEG Project Recycle. Reforest. Repeat. I participated in this as well & contributed 305 KG of newspaper collected over 1 month.

Readers, I encourage all of you to come forward & organize such campaigns in your respective regions. Share your smiles with other needy kids. You might be having similar items in your house. Please gather them, arrange same from your friends & peers & neighbors and donate them to some NGO or other needy children. You will have free space in your house & your items will bring joy on many faces.

All recycling is not limited to paper & plastic. This is another novel recycling where your undesired items are used by others. Sometimes we just throw them away & this eventually land in the landfills. Please save landfills & try to divert waste from landfills as much as possible.

Thanks for reading.
