Global Warming and The UAE

by | 23-07-2016 05:35

More than 25 years ago, our scientists warned us of catastrophic environmental changes that could lead to extreme climatic activity in the near future in almost every part of the earth. These climate scientists called this a word, which now rules over headlines, climate change.

After further research, a shocking discovery revealed that it was the very use of CFCs for refrigerants, excessive CO2 and Sulphur dioxide production from vehicular emissions, and several other human activities would fuel the environmental crisis that approached. Another new word called global warming was introduced, as a result of the observed hole in the Ozone Layer.

While these may sound as logical reasons to cut-down human activities that caused environmental damage, the world did not respond in this way. The idea was ridiculed not only by commoners but by our world?s leadership as a whole.

It is because of this very reason the present world is facing global warming, let alone knowing about it.  Most importantly, the issue is neither local warming, regional warming nor national warming. It is an issue of global significance, which naturally means that the solution too should be global-level action.

Effective global action means a collective effort from each and every region under the regulation of their own individual national guidelines. The biggest step that has become a recent impetus for almost every nation towards a world devoid of global warming in its every form, is the Paris Climate Agreement in 2015.

Meeting the demands of the Conference of Parties or COP21 goals of limiting global warming by 2? by 2050 will require social and economic changes both domestically and on an international level,

An event, entitled ?The Road from Paris?, took place in March, just a few months after the Paris Summit, at Zayed University and was attended by environment experts from around the world to discuss solutions and strategies the UAE can introduce to actively abide by the international agreement.

The UAE, in this way ensured that the Paris Agreement was not just a facade. It emboldened the fact that it will, as a region, work at its level best to take concrete action on global warning. Furthermore, creating result-oriented green initiatives make it a leader in global warming management.

Global Warming is not just an environmental challenge, it is a development issue, which has enormous social and economic consequences, we need to know that scale of the stand against the sustainable development.

The UAE emerged from COP21 in a good position to maintain pace of development while also adopting sustainable energy habits, said experts at ?The Road from Paris? forum.

Countries had to submit their nationally determined contributions (NDCs), which defined each country?s aims for the next five years, before the first review of COP21?s outcomes.

The UAE?s NDCs were considered among the most ambitious.

The UAE government has committed to developing sustainable economies through various initiatives, including sustainable development, and investing in renewable energy. The agreement that resulted was robust yet flexible, adding that steps were already being taken by the UAE to address climate change.

For a relatively young country like the UAE, this possibility is critical to continually develop the economy. Dr Abdul Haddad, a regional programme officer at the United Nations Environment Programme, said the UAE and GCC had to cooperate to meet their climate target. The nation has already invested billions in renewable energy as it would provide a key component of the future economies of the region.

Recently, the USA Today reported that the hole in the Ozone was actually healing, largely due to a variety of government measures towards green economies, that has alleviated the GHG production and increased presence of carbon-absorbers such as trees and forests. Our actions as one sustainable world are already showing signs of success and hence, we can be certain that we aren?t far from a day when global warming is not a word any longer J.
