![]() ![]() Last Saturday, my team, Green Team Indonesia, and I went to teach in LAB, Lentera Anak Bali (Bali Children?s Lantern) at our local market. We taught street children that couldn't afford to go to school and whose parents does not feel the need to send their children to school. Instead of going to school, they work from a very young age by carrying the customer?s goods on their heads. There were about 34 children. Some were still under 5 years old and some were already a teenager. We were fortunate enough to have a custom made uniform for these children donated to us. The children were very excited to try on their new uniforms. Some of them weren't able to wear their own shirt so we helped them. We taught them crafts and cooking. We made some collage art with origami paper where we cut the origami paper into tiny pieces and the children will stick the pieces onto another paper that has an apple, cow or flower printed onto it. I had two children that I was teaching and they were the best. At first they each had to make the printed apple look nice. They were so excited when they were almost done until they looked at their friends and saw that it was more colourful. They then proceeded to ask me for another paper, which I told them that it was all gone. Somehow they found a new one, but there was only one so they had to share. They wanted to make it all pretty and nice when suddenly, they decided to give up. They cut an origami into a big circle that would fit the size of the apple and proceeded to stick it onto the paper right away. I was laughing so hard I could barely breathe and so I helped them by tracing the shape of the apple onto the origami that they have stuck onto the paper. Then they decided they were done and I collected the paper. After that, we made fruit salads with watermelons, papayas, cantaloupes, sweet condensed milk, cheese and mayonnaise. Only the big kids were allowed to use knives. The boys and the girls were separated into two teams. They were so excited because after that, we ate the fruit salad together. Here, we discovered that they loved cheese. Once we were done, we took pictures together. I was snapchat-ing and so I put some filters on them. They thought it was only a normal selfie until they saw the filters. I put on the doggy filter for them, the mermaid filter (which was taken down already, unfortunately) and the flower filter. They were so amazed and kept laughing and asking to put it on again and again. This was our first class after a fire started in our former local market. The local market was then transferred to this new area and so this, to us, is a new beginning with new hope and new education system. We have decided that this time, we will be giving rewards to the outstanding students. By rewards, we are not giving objects that would be thrown away some time soon but, we are giving them experience and memories. The rewards include taking them to the WaterPark, Cinema and Zoo every three months. We started this new system in order for the children to be more motivated in becoming the best they can be. This is how we spread the word of kindness. To us, the environment is not only about garbage and planting trees. It is also about our surroundings, caring for the people around us.
