California's Recycling Practices

by | 21-06-2016 14:51

This month?s topic is Recycling. I was hesitant to write about one side of recycling because in America, there is variety of recycling going on. After taking considerate thoughts, I decided to introduce the way Americans practice recycling as well as the different types of recycling we have. Before I start, I would like to inform everyone that the rules for recycling differ for every states and regions.

Here in California in Los Angeles County, we collect trash, Green wastes (dead plants or grasses) and recyclable waste separately every Thursday. Fascinating thing about recycling here is that we get certain money back for recyclables we turn in at Recycling center. Ralphs, for instance, has its own recycling center and lets customers buy foods and goods from the credits they got through recycling. Because recycling wastes can lead up to considerable amount of money when collected over time, recycling often serves as one of the frequent fundraisers for high school clubs to earn money and do something nice for our environment at the same time.

Waters are also effectively recycled. Taking California as an example, California is known for its severe drought continued for several years now. So what we do here in California is that we recycle water for mostly for irrigation covering nearly half of the recycled wastewater, for production in the factories and even for drinking purposes. This is done through water treatment plants rapidly built in California. One I?ve visited in Stanford, CA area, for instance, had 4 steps in recycling regular wastewater into drinkable water using ultraviolet (uv) lights and mono particles.

Also, regarding the practice of recycling, America has America Recycles day on November 15th every year. This is the day where diverse group of kids, student organizations, adults and environmental conservation groups promote recycling through various means. People uploads video reporting their activities, take pledges and share their stories on social media how they take part in recycling.

(I would like to add comments regarding Bustomi's request on the picture sources. The first picture of me putting soda bottle is the recycling machine to weight recycables. We get the money back in receipt form where we present it at the store to buy goods (second picture) Another comment I wanted to make disregarding the picture is that I feel like our recycling system is pretty well set up because majority of people practices it so well!)
