Recycling is a very important process. It helps convert waste materials into reusable substances. This prevents waste of materials that are potentially usable, reducing consumption of raw materials, air pollution, energy usage hence reducing the need for disposal of waste thus reducing greenhouse gas emissions as compared to the use of fresh raw materials. In my country Kenya, a company known as EcoPost Limited has demonstrated the immense benefit of recycling especially to the environment. EcoPost uses 100 percent recycled plastic to manufacture durable, aesthetic and environmentally friendly plastic lumber that are useful in applications ranging from landscaping to fencing. EcoPost produces the most environmentally conscious product in the Kenyan market. EcoPost promotes sustainable development of both urban and rural communities as it uses 100 percent recycled material thus keeping plastic out of the landfills hence reducing cutting down of trees by giving an alternative to timber. Each tonne saves 1.66 tonnes of CO2 leading to cleaner neighborhoods and the recycling uses 75 percent less energy than used in raw plastic production. This is a long term solution that uses recycling to reduce the carbon footprint. This is also creating employment opportunities for vulnerable youth groups. |
