Apple - Technology and Sustainabilityby Adam Zhou | 10-06-2016 20:04 |

![]() I was recently looking into my old works about the environment and I stumbled across one assignment from two years ago. After research on a topic of choice, mine being electronics, the assignment culminated to writing an expository essay written in the voice of a person pertinent to the issue. I may not remember the grade that I got or the number of hours spent on work, but what I do know is that I learned something new. It is really effective to combine your passions and concerns as to make change. Enjoy! As an Apple product designer, I believe that the Apple Company is becoming more sustainable than ever especially to the nature and the environment. Apple takes away harmful toxins from its products to make it more safe and friendly to its users and the environment. In addition, the Apple Company now uses more recyclable materials when producing its products. Renewable energy has also been used to be friendly to the environment as well. Firstly, Apple is one of the worlds most eco-friendly electronic manufacturers since it takes away toxic chemicals such as Mercury, Lead, BFRs, PVCs and others from screens, electronic enclosures and circuits. Before Apple didn?t know about the consequences these toxins can impact on the environment. These toxins polluted land, air, and water and so life was difficult to thrive in. People in poverty have to especially suffer through these consequences from burning, sorting and disposing electronics while harmful toxins seep into the soil, river and the air. But this does not matter to them. They only want to earn money and without this job they would not make any money. Now this is changing and both our company and many others are preventing toxin use so we can live in an environment that everyone wants to live in. Secondly, Apple also uses much more eco-friendly materials to manufacture its products so when we don?t need to use them anymore it can be recycled at a Recycling Plant. We also make sure that those products get recycled properly and not just burned up and dumped onto a landfill. There is a large decrease in the number of e-waste we make and so if we continue this amount, we can help maintain our world. Partially that is because of the items such as bio-plastic, aluminum, and the glass on our electronics are now recyclable to preserve the environment. In addition, Apple uses much less packaging than before to save on paper and plastic. Thirdly, Apple has now been using renewable energy to manufacture and distribute its products. Those energies Apple use are solar, hydro, wind, and geothermal energy. Greenhouse gases produced by Apple has been reduced significantly which makes the air around it?s factories much less polluted. Apple also has influenced other electronic companies to do this as well. Instead of using an airplane to distribute Apple products, Apple uses more vehicles that rely on renewable energy or vehicles that don?t produce too much Carbon Dioxide and other greenhouse gases. To conclude my thinking, I would like to state that Apple is a company that maintains its environmental sustainability to both its users and the environment around us. Toxins and harmful chemicals are extracted from the electronics which forms the reduction of fossil fuel use. Apple can be trusted in maintaining our Earth with support in the reasons I have told above. Instead of thinking that our Planet Earth is becoming more polluted and trashed and doing nothing, think positively and use recyclable and toxin-free items. You can also support a trustworthy company that correctly disposes electronic waste or others. You can make a change in our world no matter who you are! Works Cited: "Apple Sold 9 Million IPhones."
