Biodiversity in Indonesia

by Dewi Retno S | 22-05-2016 18:30

Biodiversity in Indonesia is really high, as equator line cross Indonesia and thus make Indonesia has tropical climate. Indonesia also known as islands country, make many islands isolated for hundred or thousand years and make the endemic rate become high. Not only have that, Indonesia also had high biodiversity in mangrove.

Biodiversity in Indonesia divide by 2 lines, Wallace?s line and Webber?s line, make it become 3 zones. The western Indonesia (left side of Wallace?s line) is consisting of Kalimantan, Sumatra, Java, and Bali. In this zone, the plants dominated by canopy and make canopy forest. And the animals from this oriental zone are big mammals (such as Sumatera elephant, honey bear, and Java tiger) and primate (like orangutan and monkey).

The eastern Indonesia (right side of Webber?s line) is also known as Australia zone. This zone is consisting of Maluku and Papua. The plant is short trees and plants that usually in flat land. The animals characteristics are small mammals (ex: kangaroo, wallaby), no primate, marsupials, and the color of bird furs (cendrawasih, kasuari) are attractive.

In the middle of the 2 zone there is zone. Example of the animals is komodo, stag, anoa. There is no a spesific characteristic animal or plant in this zone.

But nowadays, many of them are difficult to spot in their habitat. Deforestation made many animals lost their home and some species of tree become rare. So it is really important to save our forest in order to protect our bio-diversity.
