[March free report] Artificial Intelligence in sustainable development

by Heidy Michell Albor Vargas | 14-04-2023 07:22

When we talk about artificial intelligence, we inevitably end up focusing on the evolution of the human being, since its transcendence is no coincidence.
But as human beings evolve, we face new technological and environmental challenges. For this same reason, I think it is relevant to mention the applications of artificial intelligence in sustainable development.
The reality is that there are different points of view to see artificial intelligence in environment protection development and as much as it benefits it, as much as it affects it.
Artificial intelligence would have wide applications with predictive algorithms, research or different models capable of analyzing terrain and calculating or analyzing possibilities. But artificial intelligence finds its shock when we talk about the energy consumed by these algorithms; the environmental impact of the processing of AI models developed or under development is equivalent to emissions greater than 280 tons of CO2; that is, emissions like those of 5 vehicles in their entire life, including production.
And under this information, we ask ourselves: friend or enemy?

The reality is that we cannot stop its development, artificial intelligence will continue its machine learning process and we will see it in research responsible for improving food, strategic algorithms or reactive machines. Our socio-economic structure based on infinite growth will never be able to get rid of artificial intelligence. The Giants would not benefit from it! But since it will be part of our lives, it could have applications within global challenges.
Artificial intelligence should focus on sustainable development goals (if we are interested in human-environmental development)
Applying artificial intelligence in multiple sectors is intended to improve them and in the case of green AI, we are already seeing different approaches to demonstrate this I will quote Xing Qu, Deputy Director General of UNESCO: 'AI must also be environmentally responsible. That is why the Recommendation on the Ethics of Artificial Intelligence encourages States to assess its impact in terms of carbon footprint, energy consumption and extraction of raw materials.'
And so in 2021, post the event 'Tuesdays together for the planet'.
Some global organizations and private companies emerged https://www.aifortheplanet.org/ that show us how powerful artificial intelligence can be in facing climate change and creating projects in order to share the best practices, celebrate success and inspire further action in this field.
