Earth Day 2016: Magic of Networking and Alliance Building

by | 14-05-2016 14:12

Networking could be the greatest asset in one's life if we invest it for a right purpose. I came to realize it at most when Aaditya Singh (Aadi) brother from UAE extended his altruistic hands when my country Nepal moaned in despair due to massive earthquake last year. In collaboration with charity table tennis association ADTTA he sent me substantial cash which I mobilized rationally to aid the earthquake displaced family in remote village of Rasuwa, Nepal. And my beloved Eco- generation as well sent lovely clothes all the way from Korea to children in the affected areas of Nepal. There are many commendable examples like this where I have visibly figured out the strength of networking and alliance building. I am so elated that our own global Eco- generation family has chosen 'Scale up via Networking and Alliance Building' as theme for this year.

In this report I would like to present one more case where networking added meaningful colors. As an ardent eco- enthusiast I was excited as Earth Day 2016 was approaching. So many ideas popped in my head, I wanted to make 22nd April a remarkable day not only for me but for all who care their mother Earth. Pondering a lot, I came to conclusion that in order to amplify the impact of celebration, collaboration with likeminded youth organizations is a must. I then invited youth leaders from different organizations within and outside my university for a meeting. On 18th April, as invited youth leaders from different organization attended the meeting. We had brainstorming session for finding the best feasible way of celebration like cycling, tree plantation, street drama and so on. Owing to some unfavorable circumstances these weren't feasible for the time period. Finally we decided why not we celebrate the glory of inter relationship between human beings and mother earth in an artistic manner. Fusion of art, music and literature would be the best way to commemorate the day. I proposed Narayani river bank to be the appropriate venue for our celebration as it was a centre of attraction for public during scorching summer. Everyone appreciated the idea and expressed solidarity for making the event huge and impactful.

In this course many youth organizations expressed their interest and lent their hands to take the lead. We decided not to assign a single organization as organizer instead every collaborating organization would be designated as partner organizations, where as Earth Day Network and Cop In My City would be official partners.  Of course! I was gladly representing my beloved Eco- generation as a partner organization of the event. Our strategy was not to insist public on joining our event but to create an inquisitive scenario which will voluntarily attract public to be a part of celebration. Our main objective was to let the public know, there is a universal festival which gratifies mother Earth for all it has generously gifted to our survival. We aimed at displaying meaningful message for motivating people in conservation and green living and ways to tackle with changing climate. For this purpose work load was divided among individuals for coordinating art group, flash mob team and literature team.  I was there as a focal point keeping an eye on the preparations and fund rising.

Finally the most awaited day 22nd April was there we reached the venue at 4pm (Nepali Standard Time) and started the preparation. Environmental Engineer from Bharatpur Sub- metropolitan municipality Mr. Birat Ghimire and Executive Director from Water and Sanitation department Mr. Shalik Gram Paudel were special guest and chief guest respectively. Mr. Anil Babu Soti and Mr. Birendra Poudel, social workers were the guests. I handed over Eco- Generation bag (promotional good) as souvenir to chief guest, special guest and chairman. In no time public gathered all around us. Flash mob team presented oh thematic dance for song 'Safe and Sound'. Poems were recited on different themes like biodiversity, climate change, pollution and environment conservation. Public exciting joined for face painting with logo of Earth. It was overwhelming to see people curiously inquiring about the event and appreciating the event. Different local media covered the news and municipality appreciated youth synergy.

We tried our best to make our celebration Eco- friendly for which we didn't have flex print instead art group painted wonderfully in cloth banner. All the art pieces, paintings and drawings displayed during the celebration have been assembled and safely stored for future use. In the mean time I can't miss to express my gratitude to our dynamic coordinators Asmita Aryal, Prashant Bhandari, Bishal Koirala, Ashish Ghimire, Puspa Raj Dulal, Subash Sunar, Pramisha Thapaliya, Dikshit Poudel and so on who coordinated different areas of this dynamic celebration. Yeah! We accomplished it TOGETHER. Unity was the beauty of this event and in serene Narayani River Bank we celebrated our Earth Day with pride and determination imparting call for action towards sustainable development.

Yeah mates, above all I want to say again "The strength of networking and alliance building is magical".
