Earth Day: Today is an Historic Day

by | 23-04-2016 10:14

Today was Earth Day, April 22nd. The doodle on Google celebrated the day, along with events worldwide.

Most importantly, the Paris climate agreement was signed today at the United Nations.  175 nations participated in signing. United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon said "Today is an historic day." However, each country must take the step to have their national government ratify the agreement, in order for it to take effect.

According to Mr. Ban, "If all the countries that have signed today take the next step at the national level and join the Agreement, the world will have met the requirement needed for the Paris Agreement to enter into force." Fifteen nations also ratified the treaty, leaving the other 160 to do so.

The ratifying countries so far include Barbados, Belize, Fiji, Grenada, Maldives, Marshall Islands, Mauritius, Nauru, Palau, Palestine, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Lucia, Samoa, Somalia and Tuvalu. Citizens from these countries must be very pleased. Let's urge the rest of the world to do so.

Can we reach a tipping point where the world will come together to save the planet? The answer is we must.  Earth Day was started in 1970 and has only gained momentum since then. Let our generation be the one to fully realize its goal.
