![]() For a region that receives no sun for only a few days every year, it is unlikely that climate would be the most major challenge for large-scale solar energy distribution. However, humidity, sand storms and soiling on solar panels are already issues that are taxing enough. The Dubai Electricity and Water Authority held a three-day workshop on how to tackle these hassles and challenges and effectively mitigate them in the near future. Solar experts, academics and industry leaders came together last week to carry out discussions on the photovoltaic module maintenance and operation. This workshop had a sea-changing role in providing support to these green initiatives, through the exchange of knowledge and skills between DEWA?s R&D centre, and many of the world?s key stakeholders in the industry. DEWA also increased its targets for renewable energy to 7 per cent of Dubai?s total power output by 2020 and 25 per cent by 2030.
Planned future initiatives like the biggest solar energy farm in Dubai, the Mohammed bin Rashid al Maktoum Solar Park, and setting up of solar panels on the roofs of every home in the emirate make the UAE increasingly dedicated towards reduction of fossil fuel dependence. Backed by a US$25 billion federal investment by 2021 in renewables - mainly solar energy - the UAE has much to lose if the rollout isn?t effectively deployed. The workshop attracted engineers and policy makers from around the region and at the same time, aimed to implement the best of measures on the different variety of organisations, companies and firms which are involved in growth and development of solar energy facilities. Some other elements involved the installation of sensors to determine dust volume, time-to-time cleaning of panels and utilising a coating that provides protection to the panels from dirt, dust and grease. Clean Energy presently provides 0.2 per cent of the country?s energy supply. The UAE government is also researching ways to boost this to 24 per cent by 2021. The UAE is dedicated to maintaining the growth and development of renewable energy solutions, and has taken stringent measures to transform the energy sector to rely on clean, green and sustainable energy.
