![]() ![]() ![]() In the previous report I explained the objectives, phases and challenges of our research based project "Is Dust Manageable in Kathmandu Valley?" In this report I would to describe the recommendations for effective management of dust based on our research. Our recommendation incorporates multi-sectoral participatory approach. Recalling the fact that, all 6 air quality monitoring stations installed in Kathmandu valley between 2000- 2003 with DANISH AID became dysfunctional since 2007. We emphasize, proper maintenance and monitoring of proposed 11 air quality monitoring stations be assured prior installation. Out of 11, nine air quality monitoring stations will be installed in Kathmandu valley. Coordination between and among departments and ministries is a must for integrated execution of any policy, rules and regulations. Likewise, subsidy provision to eco- friendly vehicles, timely management of earthquake debris is crucial and urgent. Environment, Population and Health (EPH) should be integrated in the school curriculum since primary level. Environment Impact Assessment (EIA) needs to be given due concern for sustainable infrastructure development. Green Cover should be maximized and public park, open spaces should be given priority in the crowded valley. Construction and Demolition act should be formulated and strictly implemented in the city. Public needs to be sensitized for self protection and encouraged to use sophisticated masks like N95 for personal protection during longer exposure to heavily dusted area as usual masks are ineffective to prevent inhalation of finer particulate matter. Within limited timeframe and resources we made our best efforts to pour limelight on the degrading air quality of Kathmandu valley and alarming threat imposed by dust. Our efforts may be a drop in an ocean but we believe it holds worthy meaning for future researches and supports Livable Kathmandu vision. To conclude, definitely it is challenging to manage dust in Kathmandu but owing to quote of legendary Nelson Mandla everything seems impossible until it's done, we believe, together we can upgrade and restore our air quality! |
