|LATIN AMERICA| Air Pollution

by Luiz Bispo | 07-04-2016 05:48

I have seen interesting news regarding air pollution in China. One citizen made bricks with dust in the air. I was so surprise at how serious pollution is in China. There is a report of air quality in Latin America and shows the toxic threat of air pollution is not only Asia problems.

The air pollution has reached at the dangerous level already from Mexico to Argentina. People in Latin America breathe polluted air and climate change is ongoing.

The area of São Paulo, Santiago, and the metropolitan area of Mexico City are the most affected by anthropogenic pollutant emissions among the Latin America urban areas. 26.5% of the total urban population of Latin America has been exposed to air-pollutant levels above the limits recommended by WHO (World Health Organization) guidelines.

However, there is good news that there are international standards and optimal practices to solve these problems. Chile has approved a regulation of the emissions of NO2, SO2 and PM2.5 from vehicles. In addition to set up new guideline, it is necessary to keep monitoring of the air quality and report the data.

Encouraging the cleaner modes of transportation is important but removing the dirty diesel fuel, which create the air pollution, has to be preceded. Renewable energy is glowing in the regions such as Brazil, Chile and Mexico. I hope that these solution is effective and work well.
