Climate Policy Class - Carbon Footprint Campaignby | 29-03-2016 02:00 |

On ITB, there's one class that's literally being Favorite among other's subject. Every majors can take the course, even you may see students from Mechanical, Mining, Petroleum, Geological Engineering, etc. Even you may see students from Astronomy, Mathematics, Oceanography, etc. Yeah, here we are, talking about Climate Change, Climate Policy, Climate Mitigation and Adaptation. "You don't need to be Environmentalist, Scientist, Policy Makers, or Climate change-ist to talk about Climate Change and its policy. What you need to have are 'Awareness' and be the Human! Because, here we are, talking about Resilience, Mitigation, and Adaptation" - Anonymous, 2016 So, what makes this class really special are, everyone's divided into 16 groups, the rule is Simple, minimized the "Double" majors on the same groups. Every group would have their own project such as Campaign, Field Project, creating Seminar or little Conference (Inviting speakers from several NGO), Interviewing the stakeholders, and etc. There's no specific Themes, as long as it's related with Climate Change, mitigation, and adaptation, It's really OK! Ah, today I would report about Carbon Footprint Campaign by 2nd Group. Background Climate Change is happening, and it's all because GHG Emissions that we emitted for our Activities. Yups, every activity we have can emit GHG Emissions direct or indirectly. So basically, we have our own Carbon Footprint! I.e. Turning on bulbs will take 10-15 watt an hour, which is emitting 15.15 gCO2 if your electrical resource came from Coal-fired power plant. Project Goals 1, Understanding what kind of activities that college students used to have 2. Find out how aware students about their Carbon Footprints 3. Campaigning how to reduce your Carbon Footprints Facts Based on survei to 130 ITB Students, they found out that: 1) Lots of students used to eat Chicken, 11 times less emit than Beefs 2) 30% of students still have bad Habits about wasting Foods! Which means, from Food sectors, students themselves not really emit too much Carbon :) 3) 58% students already bring their own Tumblr 4) 82% students haven't brought their own Goody-bags, which makes them consumed more Plastic Bags! (Although) the government itself already had Payment Plastic Bags policy. Yups, by the fact that 1 kg Plastic emits 6 kgCO2, this sectors still emits lots of CO2 5) 95% students used to have Handphone and Laptop, while 34% of them having TV, 13% of them having Water Heaters, 6% using Air-conditioners. 6) 76% students used to unplugging their charges while they aren't using it. If students didn't aware with what they did, it can cause "Energy Vampire", which is gonna increase our carbon footprints indirectly! 7) 57% students didn't use any re-use papers (which will consume more and more Trees) 8) 51% students print something using Back and Forth papers. Well, this number is quite low (need to increase their Awareness!) Although several companies already used "Renewable Energy", tree logging will emit GHG emissions to the atmosphere directly! Which means, increasing our footprints! 9) 14% students went to campus by walking, 29% using Public Transportation, and 57% using private transportation 10) 58% students didn't know what is Carbon Footprints Huft, this sector will give us more Carbon Footprints, by the fact, most students use their own transportation that can contribute more GHG emissions directly! Results Well, due to these facts, every member on Groups would have their own Posters to promote and campaign about Carbon Footprints. They spread these posters on Instagram, Line, Facebook, Twitter, etc Mostly, they will explain about Carbon Footprint itself and how to reduce our Carbon Footprints by simply changing our behaviors! Here's several good posters :) |
