Reintroduction of oryx

by | 25-03-2016 00:33

The Environment Agency Abu Dhabi has reintroduced 25 scimitar horned oryx to their natural habitat in Chad.

It was part of its work with the Chad government on a reintroduction programme aiming to create a healthy population of as many as 500 of the oryx in an isolated natural reserve.

The first shipment will be held in a large, fenced area until they are ready to be released into the wild after the start of the rainy season, reported Wam, the state news agency.

The oryx will each be fitted with a satellite collar that will be used to track and help protect the animals. The species is considered extinct in the wild, and the UAE is home to the largest single population, at 3,000 oryx kept in captivity.
