The 2nd Asia Pacific Forum on Urban Resilience and Adaptation

by | 23-03-2016 02:33

Dear Eco-leaders!

Tonight I will share about my experience, as a speaker on The 2nd Asia Pacific Forum on Urban Resilience and Adaptation in conjunction with The 16th International Convention on Melaka Twin Cities.

After achieving great success from Resilient Cities Asia-Pacific 2015, ICLEI Local Governments for Sustainability, South Asia is back with its second Asia-Pacific Forum on Urban Resilience and Adaptation – Resilient Cities Asia-Pacific 2016 scheduled to be held at Hotel Equatorial, Melaka from 2-4 March, 2016.

I was being Speaker on "Youth & Resilience" Plenary session, as a Youth Representative of Indonesia and Project Leader of Disaster Creative Mapping and Education (DCME). DCME was one of seed-grant winner of Be a Young Hero on Disasters (BEYOND) ASEAN 2015, focusing on addressing vulnerability issues on Slum Areas, towards Urban & Climate Resilience. Slum area is one of the most vulnerable place on cities because it's dense populated, having lots of narrow streets, and the societies itself still lack of Education about Disasters. These were the Reasons why we want to provide Evacuation-route maps, infographics about "dos and donts while disaster happens", and giving education to the local youth communities and societies.

So, I would like to share about the events and Melaka itself. The main objective of the program is to create a space for local governments, institutions and communities where they can come together to discuss climate resilience in urban areas.  According to Judith Rodin, the President of Rockefeller Foundation, ?Tackling climate change challenges may require radical new approaches, new ways of thinking and perhaps even an entirely new discipline around the idea of planetary health?. Yups, the event itself discussing about SDGs, Urban&Climate Resilience, and of course, tackling Climate Change! There's some kind of Green Exhibitions, where there's Youth, Forest City, Erasmus University of Rotterdam, Philips, WWF "Save Penyu", The Melaka Green Technology Corporation,Weee Go Green, KeTTHA stands.

I learnt a lot from KeTTHA stand, which is telling us about what kind of Policies they have done to Melaka. Nowadays, Melaka is one of Zero-waste city! They don't even use any plastic bags because it's prohibited. And ..... the process itself almost taking 2 years. The first time, they did some kind of "No plastic Bags campaign on Friday and Saturday",  and extends it to Sunday, and it's official on 1st January, there's "Everyday is No Plastic Bags Day". Yups, the shopping malls would use "Biodegradable" plastics which is more Eco from the old ones. So, are you still thinking it's Impossible to do 'No-plastic bags day' ?

Lots of things have happened on Melaka, I do appreciate the governments to manage it really well. Melaka is literally Green City! It's clean, having several electrical buses, solar power plant based, almost zero-waste city, the first time I saw it, I take a deep-breath because it's really well-managed city! Although the atmosphere is quite similar with my hometown, having high-temperature, beach-alike atmosphere, and etc. Comparing it with my hometown and ..... yups, makes me wonder if I can change my city to become and even more than this great city! Ganbatte!

Overall, I do enjoy my trip in this City and it has inspired me to change my country environment much better! Yups, #SmallActMatters, I didn't expect to be invited in this GREAT events! #VoiceOfYouthMatters because we're NOW and FUTURE Leaders. Governments would listen to us if we can speak-up our Voice!

Ganbatte! Ganbatte to us! Eco-young-leaders!
