Air Quality in Californiaby | 20-03-2016 16:51 |

After Industrial Revolution, the industry has boomed as the result, the air pollution rapidly increased. From USA Today I read an interesting article about the most polluted cities in America, and it is hard to believe that seven of the most polluted cities in America (sauter, Michael B. Wall St. 8.22.15) are from my home state, California. Today I would like to introduce how polluted the air in California is and what effort my home town, city of Torrance, has put in to improve the air quality. The article suggested that more than 138 million people (serves to be nearly 44% of our country?s population) reside in the areas where air pollution reaches dangerously high levels for some considerable time. It is very unfortunate to find out that huge portion of the population comes from my home State. Here are top 5 cities with the most air-pollution. (All from California, surprisingly!) Fresno placed the first place. The article suggests that although the condition has improved, the city?s center proved to be the most polluted in our country. California?s statewide extreme drought is believed to take part in this Hot and dry weather can promote dust storms and wildfires, which is then claimed to trap the particles generated by harmful substances. Around 97,000 residents suffer with Asthema, and city experienced about 68 days of high ozone days per year. Bakersfield, Visalia-Porterville-Hanford, Modesto-Merced, and Long Beach in Los Angeles (neighboring city to where I live!) placed second through fifth, demonstrating how much effort California has to put in to improve this quality. So what happened to my home town? I?ve been hearing a lot of testimonies from senior citizens around me. They told me that it was hard to see close distance over the slope from the distance one is standing. The atmosphere was blurry and dark gray. Thus every one of them I?ve talked to was so impressed and amazed by how much city can change through recognizing and facing the problem. I wasn?t able to research and find out what efforts our citizens exactly made (Torrance is just a little suburb in Los Angeles County!) I am sure that residents from my hometown are very well aware and have very well adapted the environmental conservation. With constant effort like these to improve the situation, I believe air quality in California will drastically improve!
