Can Car Free Day Reduce Air Pollution?

by Dewi Retno S | 17-03-2016 23:21

Car free day is an event where people not using motor-engine vehicle and using bike or walk instead. In Indonesia, some cities already make their own car free day. Usually it was in weekend, and people can enjoy their day with sport such as biking or jogging. Car free day itself actually create to reduce air pollution in big city. Theoretically, people don?t use their vehicle thus reducing the emission.

In one of my lessons, my professor questioned whet ever car free day is effective to reduce air pollution. She said that the high concentration of emission in neighborhood can migrate to the lower concentration one, in this case is the area which held car free day. So, if the area which surrounded ?car free day? area still produce high emission or pollution, it?s possible that the air pollution is still happen in that area.

The other problem from explanation above is the people health in car free day area. They may assume that the air quality is in good condition because of there was no vehicle. But maybe there is still much pollution from neighborhood.

So, what should we do?

Indeed car free day can reduce emission thus minimizing air pollution. But we need to remember that it was only in that area. Emission in neighborhood is also need to decrease in order to keep air pollution from happening. One solution in my mind is to determine a car free day in a week, where almost all parts of the city can participate in. It?s effective to reduce pollution and also keep the emission from migration.
