On 6th of Falgun(18th February 2016) we headed for Sikles from our college at about 5:30 A.M. in the morning .After walking two hours we reached Kahunkhola and then we had tea and also arrangements were made for a Jeep to take us upto Sabi as we had chosen to trek upto Sikles instead of going there by bus. At Sabi we took some food and tea and then at about 9:30 A.M. we started our trek. Our trek started with the view of the magnificent Himalayas and the whistling of the Mardi River. The scenario was picture perfect and simply enchanting. We walked by the river, grassland, forest and at the front we had the view of beautiful mountains. After walking for two hours our trails besides the river came to the end. Right there we could observe ghatta (Water Mill), it is a traditional mechanism for grinding grains. It is a good example of Traditional/indigenous knowledge which focuses on utilization of the natural resources in efficient way. After that we had to walk up hill. On our way uphill we could see terraces made for farming. It is a common practice in the hills and mountains of the country but lately in many places they are left barren due to low productivity as well as migration of people to the nearby cities. Walking uphill in the heat wasn?t easy but thanks to those water taps and Chautari on the way that kept us at ease. There were many taps on the way made by different people at different times as a memorial of their departed family member. This shows how humanitarian activities can be done in the simplest yet most meaningful manner. At about 3:30 P.M. we reached our destination. We had a warm welcome by the villagers there and then arrangements were made for our stay there. This beautiful Gurung village is renowned for its successful eco-tourism practice. we could witness the good impacts of eco-tourism there through the environment there. There were proper toilets and bathrooms at each house, dustbins were placed at different locations and the environment was green and clean. So,this is the first day at Sikles,I will post about the festival we were there for in next reports.
