Taean Becomes a World National Park after Overcoming Oil Spill

Taean-gun is a region of tidal mudflat located at the West of South Korea. In the December of 2007, there was a large oil spill where 12547kL of oil leaked into the wetlands. At the time, more than 2 million volunteers visited Taean to help clean the oil spill. As eight years have passed since the spill, the wetlands of Taean are now clean as they were before.
Recently, on the 31st of December, 2015, the IUCN, also known as International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources, selected Taean-gun as one of the World National Parks. Taean-gun was classified in the category of V, which is the category for land and marine scenery protection area. IUCN reported that they chose Taean because of the effort to restore the environment and by giving Taean-gun a level of V, it also shows that they acknowledged that the ecological value, and that the state of management and preservation is favorable.
With Taean-gun getting classified as V, Dadohaehaesang National Park, and 3 parts of DeogyusanNational Park were graded as Ia, the best rank in the categories of IUCN.
