Last week was a Lunar New Year Holiday in Korea. During that time most of family members get together and celebrate the new year's day while eating many traditional foods. Every year in this holiday season, local governments always have headaches on pileup of food wastes coming out of each family because more than 30 million people are visiting their hometowns. In general, the amount of food wastes during the holiday is more than twice as much as that in the normal season. In addition, even collecting companies are off duty during the holiday, so it would make matters worse by producing more pileups of food wastes. This year's Lunar New Year Holiday, the Climate-Environmental Office of Seoul City, along with the Korea Climate-Environment Network and the Green Citizen Association, released a campaign about how to make an eco-friendly Lunar New Year Holiday. Also, the Ministry of Environment opened a booth in some major train stations and distributed fliers and eco-bags to homecoming people. Among the many ways to make the holiday more eco-friendly, the Climate-Environmental Office suggested using public transportation, using less disposable products while traveling and making just proper amount of food for family members. Traditionally in Korea, making enough food has been known as being kind and generous to others, but this may not be the best way to treat family members in the environmental way. The campaign says that 20% reduction of food wastes can save about US 150 million dollars per year!!! It may be a good way to share with your cousins and grandparents how to protect our environment and what would be the eco-friendly holidays. Reference: http://www.yonhapnewstv.co.kr |
