![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() All waste materials are recycled in Nigeria, from polythene to plastics and papers, but damaged / used vehicle tyres are not. Then I decided to innovate along this area. Mobile Kitchen Garden MKG initiative. This was bore out of the fact that used vehicle tyres causes a lot of menace in Nigeria, ranging from burning on the road when vehicles breaks down, used for burning refuse which influence global warming and cause environmental damage, used for dangerous game by children, obstruct drainages, litter the streets, breeds mosquitos to mention but a few, these and many more made me see reasons why I need to get the tyres out of our roads and streets for a more productive and economic use. Due to the tediousness of the project which needed a lot of man power, I decided to go through the children because of: 1. Their population 2. They are excited and happy doing it – not seeing themselves too big to pick used tyres to work on them 3. Their minds are opened to learning After harnessing these tyres from the streets, we cut the top of the tyres, seal one end of it with ?used poultry feed sacks? and sticks, after sealing, we load it with good loamy soil, we add dead leaves as fertilizer and leave it for a week to decompose, after which we plant our vegetables. The children are happy doing this aside the little income they get from it, they are very excited seeing their gardens grow. Note: 1. We employed local content initiative, that is, all the materials used for the garden were gotten from the communities. 2. It is mobile because when the rain or sun is much, you can move it to a better location. |
