Uganda to Launch Africa's First Solar Bus

by | 07-02-2016 02:26

The world is in need of a sustainable renewable energy solutions to the use of fossil fuels in our daily lives and thankfully, we are responding positively to this need. Green innovations have been largely based on using solar to generate electricity but doesn?t the prospect of driving and mass producing solar powered cars tickle your fancy?

Well, Uganda has manufactured and is about to launch Africa's first solar powered bus in Africa. The bus gains it energy through the solar panel on the roof which harvests the solar energy and can be on the road for eight hours non-stop at fully capacity which is the equivalent of approximately 80km.

The bus called Kayoola in the local language which reportedly translates to "mass carrier" relies on two power banks- lithium ion batteries- that power it and has a passenger capacity of 35. The bus manufactured by Kirra Motor Corporation with the full sponsorship of the Ugandan government has a power of 150KW and a solar power capacity of 1320W.

The East African nation is so proud to be spearheading clean energy in the automobile industry.

According to Chimreports, the Ugandan President Museveni will launch the eco-friendly buses built by about 100 Ugandans with locally sourced materials on February 16th, 2016 and I can't hide my excitement as Africa has continued to make immense contributions towards the gradual shift from a fossil-fuel based global economy to a green economy based on clean energy.
