French supermarkets banned from throwing away and spoiling unsold food

by | 05-02-2016 22:48

I would like to adopt the same title I read in the new of Independent. Sure, the title was enough to set smile curve in my face.

A victory for all of the environmentalist, stakeholder and all respective person with concern on the topics of food security and Food wastes.

The news read as "Supermarkets in France have been banned from throwing away or spoiling unsold food by law.The stores are now required to donate unwanted food to charities and food banks. To stop foragers, some supermarkets have poured bleach over the discarded food or storing binned food in locked warehouses."

The most cherishing part of the news is that the law was voted unanimously by the French senate on Wednesday after a petition was launched by Paris councillor Arash Derambarsh. It will apply to any supermarket with a footprint of 400 square metres or larger.

What's more, there is system of penalty for defying the laws which can be clear from the statement of news "If companies flout the law they coud incur fines up to 75,000 Euros (㿡,000) or two years in prison."

While we the eco generation are celebrating "No Food Waste" campaign, is not this more than awesome that a powerful and mighty country which proved its concern on Climate Change recently has yet showed another leap in managing the food waste problem.

Its gives me such a pleasure to know that such supermarkets will be compelled to donate food to charity organisations and food banks. Hence directly benefiting people suffering from starvation and nutrition deficient.

Even if we focus on managing already produced foods (post harvest management) instead of solely stressing on increased food production, food security can still be ensured in cheaper and more eco-friendly way. This law will ensure the food reaches the plate of those in need instead of pits.

 Sure, Green Days Ahead!!!!
